Pharmacy Technician

Intro

The Pharmacy Technician program prepares students to support pharmacists by performing a wide range of practice-related duties for community, institutional, compounding, long-term care, mail-order, and other pharmaceutical settings. Students learn the most common medications, calculate dosages, process prescriptions, bill third-party insurance, learn aseptic techniques, and prepare sterile and non-sterile compounded medications. Students receive extensive hands-on training in the lab area using advanced pharmacy technology.

Objectives

  • Practice personal and interpersonal skills needed in various pharmacy settings.
  • Demonstrate the pharmacy technician's role in the medication-use process and wellness promotion.
  • Recall the most utilized drugs by brand and generic name, indications, and interactions.
  • Solve pharmacy mathematical calculations.
  • Prepare sterile and non-sterile compounds.

This course prepares you forÌýnational certificationÌýandÌýUtah State licensure.

Programmatic Requirements
Students will receive additional pre-enrollment programmatic requirements, if applicable, via email. If you have not received this email within 24 business hours, please check your spam or junk mail folders.

Workkeys Assessment: Workplace Documents (Level 5), Graphic Literacy (Level 5), Applied Math (Level 5) and keyboarding (25 nwpm).Ìý

Students must be at least 18 years old.

Students must be current on all vaccinations.ÌýImmunization Requirements
Illicit drug use, criminal background checks, and immunization status may prevent future employment as a pharmacy technician. Externship sites, employers, and the Utah State Board of Pharmacy have regulations about drug use, criminal backgrounds, and immunizations. Unable to comply with these regulations may prevent your completion of the program.

Enrollment/Registration

Once the programmatic requirements have been completed, the next step is to meet with a Student Services Representative to complete your enrollment. You will declare your starting date, enrolled hours, and set up your payment schedule.

The first month's payment or completed Financial Aid is required at the time of enrollment. No appointment is necessary. If you have any questions, Student Services can be reached at 435-753-6780 orÌýstudentservices@btech.edu or you can visit us in person at the Logan Campus!Ìý

The Process

Apply for FAFSA at and BTECH school code: 014257.

BTECH receives student FAFSA records.

Financial Aid will send an email to students to create a VerifyMyFafsa Account.

The student creates an account and submits the required documentation.

Students will complete enrollment with BTECH.

Financial Aid will email the student a link to schedule a required Financial Aid Offer meeting.

Pell Grant is disbursed.

The Process

Apply for scholarships at /scholarships (soft deadline (5th of each month).

BTECH emails a link to schedule a Scholarship Interview.

Interview with the Scholarship Committee (generally 3rd Tuesday of each month).

BTECH evaluates the interview rubric and available funds.

Notified of award results within 4 weeks.

The student will receive a link to schedule a meeting to accept the award.

BTECH disburses scholarships.

**Attendance is required.

To obtain a national certification, students must successfully pass a national exam, either the PTCE or the ExCPT.

Once certified, certificants must complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of continuing education (CE) during each two (2) year recertification cycle. AnyÌýCE hours earned must be inÌýpharmacy technician-specific subject matter. For recertification candidates, one (1) hour of the twenty (20) hours must be in the subject ofÌýpharmacy law and one (1) hour must be in the subject of patient safety.

Students in 2023-2024 had a 100% pass rate on the PTCE
To obtain Utah State Licensure students must:

  • Complete 2 finger-print cards
  • Complete an Affidavit of Education
  • Obtain a copy of the current Certification of Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT) or National Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination (PTCB)
  • Complete a pharmacy technician application and submit to the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL).

The Pharmacy Technician program is officially recognized by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)

The Pharmacy Technician program is accredited through the ASHP/ACPE as Entry- and Advanced-Level Status
